Good Fats vs Bad Fats

Difference between Good fat and Bad fat

As you may have guessed from the name, good fats are good for health and bad fats are bad for health. But let's see what makes fat good or bad.

Good Fat:

Generally, there are two groups of fats: saturated and unsaturated. Good Fats are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. They are found in olive oil, avocados, rice, sunflower oils, flax seeds, nuts, fatty fish, eggs,  and many more. But always remember "Anything in excess or lack is bad for health".

Bad Fat:

Bad Fats are saturated and trans fats. They are potentially harmful to your health and can lead to various health problems. They are found in Commercially-baked foods (pastries, doughnuts, muffins, cakes, pizza, and more), Packaged snack foods (crackers, chips, and more), Fried Foods (French fries, fried chicken, chicken nuggets, and more), and any deep-fried food which has excess oil in it.

How to choose the right foods?

  • For cooking use plant-based oils such as olive oil, sunflower oil, and peanut oil.
  • For omega-3 fatty acids, you can consume flax seeds, oily fish like salmon, and walnuts.
  • Read the food label and ingredients before you eat that food. Make sure it doesn't contain any trans fat and oil should not be hydrogenated (Hydrogenation is a process where manufacturers add hydrogen to oil to keep food fresh).
  • Avoid Deep-Fried and Processed Foods like pizza, burgers, pastries, French fries, chicken nuggets, and many more.

Conclusion:

Avoid Deep-Fried, Processed, Packaged, and Commercially-baked foods that contain saturated and trans fats. Instead, consume monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, use plant-based oils but not in excess, have omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, and read food-label and ingredients before eating.
